SESSION TIMING:
I like to plan newborn sessions in the morning since sessions can typically last 2-3 hours. We also want to plan around baby’s feeding times so that you will be arriving at the time of your baby’s next feeding.
(If your baby is eating every 2 hours and eats at 7am, we will set your session time for 9am.)
We will communicate an approximate time the day before your session and I ask that you communicate with me the morning of the session if baby’s feeding times change at all.

Babies are ALL different. No matter what your baby does, relax.  Your session should be a special experience for you and stress free. Babies can sense stress and it usually makes them cry more. I allow plenty of time for your session and if we need to take a break to feed or rock we will do just that! I want you to enjoy this experience of your session.

It is my hope that you come to my home studio feeling comfortable and at home. I am truly honored to be able to document this incredible time in your lives and look forward to getting to capture these images of your sweet baby!

Before being photographed there are a few things to consider, so please read below for a few simple ideas to make the experience more successful:

PREP

1. This is probably the most important step you will take to prepare for your session.
A bath, awake time and/or interacting with your baby for at least 2 hours if not more before the session will ensure that baby is very sleepy arriving for their session. Even if your baby normally is a sound sleeper, or goes right back to sleep after eating at home, please follow this step. Keeping baby awake as much as you can before the session will hopefully they will be super sleepy when they arrive and this is what we want!

Don’t worry about baby acne or little scratches. My editing will either eliminate or drastically minimize these. If your baby has extremely dry/flaky skin, try putting baby lotion on prior to coming to your session, but avoid any lotions that will leave a shine to their skin.

ARRIVING

2. Upon arriving, you will be able to feed your baby and once burped, we will then start preparing him/her for the session, meaning any and all clothing must be taken off, except for the diaper. Please do not overly dress baby in clothing that is hard to take off. A zippered onesie or sleeper gown will work great so they do not have to be disturbed too much. No tight socks or clothing that may leave indentions in the skin as this will make the editing process take a bit longer.

Family (and sibling) photos will be done first. For parents with other small children, please keep in mind that the newborn portion of the session can last a few hours. If you would like to bring toys or an iPad to help keep them occupied, you are more than welcome to.

FEEDING + PACIS

Please have a pacifier handy! This is another important tip. I recommend pacifiers such as the Philips Avent pacifier, or any one-piece silicone paci. I like these best because they won't leave lines on the baby's face after taking it out of their mouth. Some moms may be against the use of pacifiers, but rest assured that the short amount of time that we may have to use it will not have a negative effect on baby. It does not stay in the baby's mouth for long periods of time, a few minutes here or there is all we should need to calm the baby. It will help soothe the baby when he or she becomes restless, making it much easier to continue with the photographs.

Please be advised that we may have to stop during the session for another feeding or just enough to get baby back into a soothed state. Please bring extra formula or have a pumped bottle on stand by just in case!

WHAT TO WEAR

Your clothing can play an important role in how the photos turn out. I always suggest wearing neutral colors and fabrics that are either solid in color or with subtle prints.
Family photos are done on simple-solid backdrops and typically show only from waist up so you can keep the bottom half comfortable if you would like! (Or even bring a comfy outfit to change into after the family photos are done)

For siblings, I also recommend neutral colors & barefoot.

Choosing colors that align with your home decor is also a good idea so everything pulls together when decorating your walls with the images!

If you prefer a specific color backdrop for the family portion of your session, please let me know before your session.
